Building on
the Strength

of Iconic Brands.

Our Business

As a key contributor to rural employment, land management, and agricultural value chains, we continue to build on the strength of iconic brands

South Africa: Integrated cane farming, three mills, refinery, Voermol Feeds, and catalytic property developments.

Vision Sugar South Africa is the birthplace and engine of the company’s purpose and growth, anchored in Tongaat, KwaZulu-Natal since the 1850s. Combining deep heritage with bold innovation, it is reclaiming leadership in agriculture and agro processing in alignment with the national Sugarcane Value Chain Master Plan.

Through two strategic businesses – sugar and property – it operates a fully integrated sugar business with cane farms, mills, a refinery, animal feeds, and distribution facilities, while its property division unlocks value through catalytic developments like the Ntshongweni Inland Dry Port and Durban’s Aerotropolis Smart City.

With operations spanning key regions of KwaZulu-Natal, including eThekwini, Zululand, and King Cetshwayo, Vision Sugar drives sustainable growth and inclusive economic development generating employment and investment in long-term community upliftment.

Zimbabwe: Two major estates and mills, the country’s largest private employer.

Zimbabwe is home to two of the country’s most recognised sugar operations, Hippo Valley Estates and Triangle Sugar, which together have the capacity to crush more than 3.5 million tonnes of sugarcane each year. Between them, they are the country’s largest private employer and the driving force behind the Huletts Sunsweet® brand, Zimbabwe’s leading household sugar name.

Building on decades of operational depth and community connection, Vision Sugar is carrying forward this legacy with renewed purpose. We honour the history, experience, and deep community ties that shaped the sugar industry, while stepping confidently into a bold new chapter as part of Vision Sugar’s broader ambition.

Beyond production, Triangle Sugar also contributes to energy diversification, with the capacity to produce over 30 million litres of ethanol annually from molasses by-products.

As the region’s largest employer, we go beyond supporting livelihoods, we unlock opportunity. By empowering small-scale farmers, strengthening community resilience, and investing in sustainable growth, Vision Sugar is driving lasting, generational change across Zimbabwe’s sugar belt.

Mozambique: Two mills and one refinery (Xinavane and Mafambisse)-cornerstones of rural economies.

Vision Sugar Mozambique is one of the country’s largest private employers and a key driver of rural economic activity. With operations in Xinavane (Maputo Province) and Mafambisse (Sofala Province), the business spans the full sugar value chain – from cane farming to milling and distribution – supporting thousands of livelihoods.

With credible local partnerships, technical strength, and a long-term mandate, Vision Sugar is working to rebuild a business that contributes meaningfully to national development, investor confidence, and inclusive growth in Mozambique.

Botswana: Blue Crystal® packing and distribution facility in Lobatse – citizen-staffed and proudly local.

Vision Sugar Botswana is firmly rooted in the country and committed to delivering long-term value through its operations in Lobatse, home to the Blue Crystal® packing facility – one of Botswana’s most recognised sugar brands. In Botswana, identity and presence matter. Vision Sugar is focused on earning trust through consistency, clarity, and contribution. We are committed to operating with discipline, supporting citizen participation, and building lasting partnerships across the value chain. As a key enabler of multiple sectors, Vision Sugar Botswana remains dedicated to strengthening its role in the national economy and playing a visible, constructive part in Botswana’s future.

Mills

Vision Sugar operates seven mills across South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Botswana – each a legacy of technical ambition and continuous evolution. What were once legacy mills are now being reactivated and modernised to perform at global benchmarks.

Innovation as a tradition

Historically, these mills have leaned on process research and development (R&D), co-generation technologies, and deep engineering know-how.

For instance:

Tongaat Hulett has long generated electricity from bagasse (the fibrous cane residue) - historically producing hundreds of thousands of MWh and exporting surplus power to grids.

In recent years, the group has committed R460 million to off-season maintenance for its core mills, officially to restore uptime, efficiency, and value recovery.

The mills are now showing recovery. In 2025, they reported sucrose extraction rates above 95 %, boiling house recoveries rising toward 90 %+, and improved operational reliability across three key KZN mills.

These technical improvements are not just “nice to have.” They matter for growers (better yield paid), for energy (lower cost base), and for resilience (fewer outages).

At Vision Sugar, we will double down on automation, predictive maintenance, energy optimisation, and digital monitoring systems, to make these mills robust, efficient, and fit for the next decade.

Farms

Our farms – both commercial estates and allied smallholder growers – are the lifeblood that feed the mills. They secure supply, sustain livelihoods, and anchor rural economies across four countries.

Smallholder integration is a strategic lever

The future of African sugar depends not only on large estates but on thousands of smallholder farmers who bring resilience, local ownership, and community value into the system.

For Vision Sugar, supporting them is not philanthropy – it is smart business. Strong growers mean stable supply, healthier communities, and deeper legitimacy in the markets where we operate.

Built on agronomic progress

Historically, the group has applied research, extension, and mechanised practices to push yields and optimise cane layouts.

Across our footprint we continue to invest in agronomy support, fair contracts, access to inputs and predictable payments so that smallholders can thrive alongside commercial producers. This is how we turn growers into partners, and partners into long-term strength.

What this looks like in practice:

In Zimbabwe more than 1,100 out-growers cultivate nearly 20,000 hectares of cane, supplying over 1.3 million tonnes in a single season. This scale is possible because of structured support: irrigation infrastructure, technical guidance, and market certainty through estate-linked contracts.

In South Africa, Tongaat Hulett’s cane agronomy teams have rolled out practices for ratoon management, field layouts, soil health, and water use optimisation. In more recent years, the push has included digital aids, varietal programmes, and irrigation efficiency.

The Huletts Refinery, established in 1911, is the largest central refinery in the Southern Hemisphere. It boasts a fully diversified liquids division and a comprehensive range of refined sugar packaging, from 250 g retail packs to bulk quantities for industrial markets, with a name plate capacity of 600,000 tons annually.

Recent investments in packing facilities, energy efficiency, and continuous improvement initiatives have positioned the refinery as an efficient producer of internationally recognised, high-quality refined sugar, highly sought after by bottlers and food manufacturers.

In addition, the refinery produces a range of specialty sugars from treacle, caramel, castor, icing sugar, to popular syrups such as Maple and Golden Syrup to niche products in the form of fructose and
glucose streams.

Tongaat Hulett Property has a proven record of shaping landscapes and unlocking value across Southern Africa – from residential and commercial hubs to catalytic developments such as the Ntshongweni Inland Dry Port and Durban’s Aerotropolis Smart City. With more than 2,000 hectares of serviced land already developed, it remains one of the region’s most experienced property developers.

As part of the Vision Sugar portfolio, this capability extends our impact beyond agriculture – creating spaces that power economies, connect people and support sustainable futures.
